Religion and politics are the two forbidden topics in society. But why? Mainly because these conversations often turn into shouting matches where one side is trying to prove the other wrong. People are especially passionate about things that they strongly believe in and voicing our opinions does not mean we are going to successfully convince anyone to agree with us. Conversations regarding two opposing sides of these topics tend to get rather heated, and so out of fear of offending a family member or friend, we prefer to remain silent.
Your opinion should not be formed by your family or your friends. If it is, then it is not YOUR opinion at all. For example, I am registered as an Independent voter, but have mostly conservative views. My parents on the other hand, are strict democrats (as most Hispanics are) with liberal views. They continue to refer to Busch as “ese viejo que destruyo este pais” and so they don’t want to see another Republican president in office again. Though I love my parents and respect their opinions, I am old enough to have a mind of my own and I will use it to form MY OWN opinions.
My stand on the abortion issue, for example, may be viewed by many as controversial, but then again every opinion is! Like someone once said “opinions are like butt wholes, everyone has one”. Many people complain about the government or our country, but the problem is that they often take for granted the privilege they have been given to vote.
I personally believe that each person should take responsibility for their own actions. Killing a defenseless child simply because you fear facing the consequences for your mistakes is in my opinion incorrect. And yes, I say CHILD and not a thing. Many pro-choice activists say that abortion is not murder because the fetus is not fully formed yet. But if a fetus has the potential of life, aren't you indeed committing murder by taking away that potential?? By taking away its ability to ever become anything greater, you are choosing for it its own destiny. Who are we to decide whether anyone deserves to live or die? Approximately 42 million abortions are preformed each year, about 115,000 each day! Who knows if those numbers include this generation’s next Bill Gates, Martin Luther King Jr., or George Washington?
Many people would say that my opinion is careless and unemotional; however, I have had several teenage friends become pregnant. I never looked down on them; instead I admire them for not choosing the easy way out and keeping the babies. Thus, no one can say that I speak harshly out of no emotional connection.
It is indeed a stigma for many teenage mothers. They are judged, frowned upon by society, and even many times disowned by their own families. However, where do the men stand in all of this?? Does it not take TWO to tango?? I mean, obviously these young ladies have not impregnated themselves! So why is it that the women must carry nearly all the responsibility for it? Though women have undoubtedly come a very long way, it is clear that we are not completely equal to men…yet.
