The first semester at college is always the most daunting one. You have been handed a syllabus from every class, containing what reports, readings, and exams will be required by the end of the semester. You probably know very few people on campus, and you are still learning your way around. This is definitely not your beloved high school where you dominated the hallways as a senior. You’re pretty much forced to start from scratch and so it feels much like your first day at kinder garden, minus the finger paints and grabbing on to mommy’s leg. It can be intimidating for anyone! By the end of the day, many freshmen wonder how they will make it through the semester; much less make it through graduation. However, the key to success in college is exactly what Professor Olivera speaks of, managing your everyday life! College life provides many entertaining distractions, which is why it is crucial to remember what your priorities are and not lose sight of the task at hand.
So I set forth on the journey of my very first assignment this semester. I must say, the thought of having my thoughts and opinions open to the public on the internet makes me feel both privileged as well as nervous. I feel in a way privileged to be a part of this new generation, promoting thought all across the web and having the ability to change another person’s perspective on a topic. However, it can also be quite uncomfortable to have other people scrutinizing your writing. I have always loved to write but as a way of venting what I feel, I’m not exactly accustomed to having people read my personal thoughts. The fact that we are required to write for the class may affect the overall outcome of our writing since we are much more likely to write from the heart when it is a topic that concerns us as individuals. Never the less, I look forward to a great semester in ENC 1102 and march on toward the goal which is ahead of me, succeeding in this class and growing as a writer.
